Salvia microphylla x greggii ‘Heatwave™ Glimmer’
An outstanding perennial for water-wise gardens, Salvia microphylla x greggii ‘Heatwave™ Glimmer’ was bred in Australia to withstand the extreme heat and dry growing conditions so commonly found there. This perennial Salvia has a compact growth habit of 30” tall x 36” wide, is well-branched and covered in shimmering creamy-white flowers that have a slight blush of pink at the tips. The deep-hued, almost black calyxes offer a dramatic contrast to the cool white blooms.
Hummingbirds, Butterflies and Bees are attracted to ‘Heatwave™Glimmer’, making it an ideal choice for pollinator gardens. The neat and tidy growth habit makes it well-suited for courtyard gardens and patio containers, and it pairs nicely with a wide range of plants in an informal perennial garden. This Salvia has good drought tolerance once established, but will look its best if given occasional, deep watering.
Blooming almost year-round, it will benefit from a good shearing back in early spring to promote fresh foliage and blooms. Plant in full sun to light shade, in well-drained soil that is rich in organic matter. The Sunset Western Garden Book indicates that the Climate Zones are 7-24. We are currently growing Salvia microphylla x greggii ‘Heatwave™ Glimmer’ in one gallon containers.
