Salvia microphylla 'Mesa Azure'
Today we dive into a lovely member of the mint (Lamiaceae) family known as Salvia microphylla ‘Mesa Azure’. A quick note, the members of the Salvia genus are commonly referred to as ‘Sages’. ‘Mesa Azure’ is a hybrid salvia beloved for its relatively compact shape and distinctive foliage and blooms. Aromatic, light green leaves climb the lower part of the stem. Crowning the upper part of the plant are light purple blooms with subtle white markings on the center of the petals. These blooms appear in late Spring and last into Fall, attracting pollinators of all sorts, from hummingbirds, to bees, to butterflies. They also make excellent cut flowers!
Reaching roughly 18’’-24’’ in both height and width, ‘Mesa Azure’ is a perfect addition to your garden space along borders and planted among other bright blooms. As is true of many salvias, these plants are drought resistant and require little to moderate watering. It thrives in full sun to light shade and well-drained soil.
According to The New Sunset Western Garden Book, Salvia ‘Mesa Azure’ can be grown in Climate Zones 7-24. Here are Clearwater Color we have gallon size pots in gorgeous bloom. Please give us a call to learn more about this plant, other Salvias, or any other plants we have growing here in early June.
