Calylophus drummondianus (Texas Primrose, Square Bud Primrose)

Calylophus drummondianus (Texas Primrose, Square Bud Primrose)

Deep in the heart of Texas you will find Calylophus drummondianus growing alongside other prairie wildflowers. This low-growing, mounding perennial is one tough plant! It can grow in areas that are hot and dry and can handle cold conditions down to 10°F. This beautiful plant goes dormant in the winter but wakes up in spring and blooms continually until late autumn.

Calylophus drummondianus grows about 12 inches tall and 24 inches wide. The slender stems are covered with narrow deep green leaves and are tipped with clusters of bright yellow, four-petaled flowers. When mass planted, the vibrant yellow flowers add a bright splash of color to any landscape. This cheerful and carefree plant is a great choice for mixed container gardens, along a border or billowing over the edge of a rock wall. An added benefit is that it attracts butterflies and other beneficial pollinators to the garden.

The Sunset Climate Zones for Calylophus drummondianus are 1-3, 6-16, and 18-24. Plant in full sun, in well-drained soil. Although it can tolerate dry conditions, it will look its very best with weekly summer water. We are currently growing Calylophus drummondianus in one gallon containers.
