Papaver nudicaule ‘Champagne Bubbles’ (Iceland Poppy)
Papaver nudicaule ‘Champagne Bubbles’ (Iceland Poppy)
One of the first signs that autumn is rapidly approaching is when we add Poppy ‘Champagne Bubbles Mix’ to our Weekly Availability list. These delightful plants add a touch of whimsy to any garden as they sway and nod in the wind. When mass planted in a flower bed, Poppy ‘Champagne Bubbles Mix’ (or any of the solid colors) causes people to stop and take notice. The mix is a combination of red, yellow, white, pink, cream and rose.
The 3” flowers are cup-shaped and have a crinkled texture resembling soft tissue paper. They stand atop strong, 12-16” stems that are covered with tiny hairs. The bushy blue-green foliage grows 10-12” wide, forming basil rosettes.
Iceland Poppies make exquisite cut flowers when they are harvested just when the buds are barley beginning to open. To increase vase life, dip the ends of the stems into boing water for about 10 seconds, then immediately place them in cool water. The blooms of the Papaver nudicaule are beautifully intricate and add texture and interest to any flower arrangement.
Papaver nudicaule ‘Champagne Bubbles’ is frost hardy to -10°F, and the Sunset Climate Zones are A2, A3, 1-6, and 10 as short-lived perennials. If grown as annuals, the zones are 7-9, 12-24. Plant in full sun in soil that is well-drained and rich in organic matter. Provide regular irrigation and twice monthly fertilization.
We are currently growing Poppy ‘Champagne Bubbles Mix’ in 6 pack flats. Plant them now for continued blooms from fall through early spring. We invite you to follow us on Instagram and Facebook @clearwatercolornursery.
