Eriogonum fasciculatum ‘Warriner Lytle’ (California Buckwheat)
Eriogonum fasciculatum ‘Warriner Lytle’
(California Buckwheat)
Native to the foothills and desert-mountain slopes of California, Eriogonum fasciculatum ‘Warriner Lytle’ is an outstanding addition to a sunny spot in the landscape. This sprawling Buckwheat grows 1-3 feet tall, with arching branches that spread 4-5 feet wide. In spring and summer, deep rose flower buds appear, opening up to pinkish-white flowers. As summer progresses into fall the flowers gradually change to a rich reddish brown.
The flowers are an excellent nectar source for Bees and Butterflies, making this a great choice for a pollinator garden. In fall the seed heads attract local birds, creating a bird-friendly habitat. In addition, its spreading growth habit provides shelter for ground-dwelling birds and reptiles, making this an all-around terrific plant for a wildlife-friendly landscape.
‘Warriner Lytle’ is a tough and resilient perennial that is both heat loving and cold tolerant. The Sunset Climate Zones are 7-9, 12-24. Plant in full sun, in well-drained soil. It has low-water needs once established.
