Festuca glauca ‘Beyond Blue’ (‘Beyond Blue’ Fescue)
Festuca glauca ‘Beyond Blue’ (‘Beyond Blue’ Fescue)
Best known for its intense, powder-blue foliage, Festuca glauca ‘Beyond Blue’ is an outstanding ornamental grass that creates a vivid display in the garden. When planted along the edge of a garden path, ‘Beyond Blue’ will beckon visitors to discover where the path leads. In a rock garden, it adds a dramatic contrast in shape, texture and color to the often smooth and fleshy leaves of succulents. Mass planted in a landscape, the brightness of the blue will cause people to stop and take notice.
Festuca glauca ‘Beyond Blue’ grows in tidy mounds, 9-12” tall and 18” wide, with quill-like blades that hold their icy-blue color year-round. Feathery, greenish-blue seed heads emerge in early to mid-summer and gradually fade to a lovely straw color in fall.
This Fescue is part of the Sunset Western Garden Collection and is well-regarded for being water-wise (once established), deer resistant, tolerant of heat and humidity, and easy to grow. It is cold hardy to -25°F, and the Sunset Climates zones are 1-24. Plant in full sun along the coast and in part shade inland.
