Baccharis pilularis ‘Pigeon Point’ (Dwarf Coyote Bush)

Native to the dunes, bluffs, dry slopes and open woods of California, Baccharis pilularis ‘Pigeon Point’ is an evergreen groundcover that is excellent for erosion control and slope stabilization. ‘Pigeon Point’ grows 1-2 feet tall and spreads 8-10 feet wide. This is a Habitat Plant, meaning its expansive branches and foliage provide shelter for ground-dwelling birds, lizards, insects and other wildlife. This CA Native is tolerant of a wide variety of soils, climates and regional conditions; from the cool and windy salt spray along the coast, to the heat of inland summers, ‘Pigeon Point’ will thrive.

Once established, it requires little water along the coast, and twice monthly inland. However, to ensure that it looks its best, spray down about once a month to keep foliage clean and dust free. When planting, give this big boy room to grow. Space 6-8 feet apart, and in a couple of years you will have a solid carpet of green. ‘Pigeon Point’ is a long-lived perennial, and will look good for 10-12 years or more. This is a good plant to fill in large areas of a landscape. Companion plant with other perennials that have similar water needs such as Salvia, Ceanothus, and Mimulus.

We are currently growing Baccharis pilularis ‘Pigeon Point’ in one gallon containers. While not as showy as many other perennials, this plant is tough as nails and will provide years greenery to your garden.
