Ceanothus ‘Concha’ (California Lilac)

One of the best-loved and oldest Ceanothus hybrids that performs well in both native landscapes and home gardens. Ceanothus ‘Concha’ is believed to have parentage of Ceanothus papillosus var. roweanus and Ceanothus impressus. This California Native grows 4-8 feet tall x 4-12 feet wide, with graceful arching branches that are covered with deep cobalt-blue flower clusters in late winter and early spring. It has glossy, 1 inch long, deep green leaves that are somewhat deer resistant.

‘Concha’s brilliant blue flowers attract beneficial pollinators and its seeds provide food for Bushtits, Goldfinches, Mockingbirds, and Crowned Sparrows. California Quail and other ground-dwelling birds will often seek shelter from the elements and from predators under the foliage of Ceanothus ‘Concha’. This species of Ceanothus is drought tolerant and is accustomed to dry summers. However, it will tolerate occasional summer water better than most others. It is also fairly tolerant of clay and alkali soils.

The Sunset Climate Zones for Ceanothus ‘Concha’ are 6-9, 14-24. It is cold hardy to 15°F. With all of the cold winter rains we have received this year, this fantastic Ceanothus is right on time, putting on an impressive display of flowers.
