Salvia leucophylla ‘Point Sal Spreader’

This California Native Sage originates from the Point Sal area in Santa Barbara County. Because its natural habitat is coastal bluffs, this tough evergreen shrub is tolerant of seaside conditions as well as drought, heat and cold. At maturity ’Point Sal Spreader’ grows 1-3 feet tall x 10-12 feet wide. It has arching branches with upturned tips. The branches root where they touch the soil, making it an excellent choice for erosion control when planted along slopes or to naturalize a large area.

The low-growing, spreading growth habit provides shelter from the elements for small mammals, songbirds and reptiles. Hummingbirds, Native Bees and Honeybees are attracted to the fragrant light pink flowers that grow in whorls along the stem. The foliage is grayish-green, and the wrinkly, lanced shaped leaves are coated with fine white hairs. Although this Salvia is extremely drought tolerant and can survive with little to no summer water along the coast, it will look its best if given a periodic watering during the driest seasons of the year.
