Digitalis purpurea ‘Camelot’ (Foxglove)
Digitalis purpurea ‘Camelot’ (Foxglove)
For those who love the charm of a cottage or woodland garden, Digitalis pupurea ‘Camelot’ is the perfect addition to the landscape. These majestic plants stand 3-4 feet tall when in full bloom, and make a dramatic display when paired with Snapdragons, Linaria, Aquilegia, Delphinium, Violas and Lobelia. This combination is a Hummingbird and Butterfly magnet!
The ‘Camelot’ series of Digitalis is a reliable first-year bloomer, and is even heavier the second year. The enchanting blooms come in shades of rose, white, lavender or cream and have a speckled throat. The foliage grows 12 inches tall and 24-30 inches wide. These are perfect for the back of a border that is visible from one side, and in the center of a bed that is visible from all sides. They perform best in partial to full sun, and planted in moist, well-drained soil. They are both deer and rabbit resistant, however slugs and snails will need to be controlled.
After the first bloom cycle prune back the main spike. This will cause the plant to send out side shoots which will bloom late in the season. They will freely self-sow, rewarding you with these lovely plants for years to come. The Sunset Climate Zones are A2, A3, 1-24. We are currently growing Digitalis purpurea ‘Camelot’ in 4.5” pots.
