Thymus x citriodorus ‘Lemon Thyme’

Native to the rocky, arid mountains of Southern France, Spain, Italy and parts of Northern Africa, Thymus x citriodorus ‘Lemon Thyme’ is also at home in the Mediterranean climate of coastal California. This versatile herb can be grown in a variety of settings including rock gardens, kitchen, herb, and cottage gardens. It thrives when planted in mixed containers with other fragrant perennial herbs such Lavender and Oregano. It has a compact growth habit with multiple, somewhat woody branches growing from the base, and tender green foliage at the tips. It grows 6 – 8” tall and wide, and requires full sun. The Sunset Climate Zones are 1-24.

The attractive, glossy leaves have a refreshing lemon scent and are used in both savory and sweet dishes. This wonderful herb can be used in any recipe that calls for lemons, lemon juice, or lemon zest. The tender stems can be used in herb bundles to flavor soups, stews and stocks. It adds a delicate lemon flavor when used in marinades for chicken or fish. Shortbread cookies that are infused with ‘Lemon Thyme’ add a touch of sophistication to any tea party. It is rich in iron, vitamin C, D and B-Complex and its refreshing lemon flavor is delicious in both cold and hot herbal teas.
