Echeveria elegans “Hen and Chicks”, “Mexican Snowball”

Echeveria elegans “Hen and Chicks”, “Mexican Snowball”

This beautiful succulent, native to Mexico, is one of the easiest, and most versatile plants you can grow. The gracefully-shaped leaves form a tight rosette (Hen), and it spreads freely by offsets (Chicks). As more and more offsets develop, Echeveria elegans creates a lovely and dense succulent groundcover. Each silvery-green rosette grows 4-6” inches tall and 6-10” across, giving it its other nickname “Mexican Snowball”. In the spring and summer, flowers spikes emerge, attracting the local hummingbird population to your garden. The flowers are pink, and are trimmed in gold, giving the appearance of a desert sunrise. They are drought tolerant, but will appreciate a bit of moisture in hot summer months. Plant in full sun along the coast and mid-day to afternoon shade inland. Echeveria elegans is useful as an indoor plant (bright room please), for green roofs, containers, borders, and rock gardens. In addition, many of today’s brides have fallen in love with the look of succulents incorporated into their bouquets and floral arrangements.

This beautiful plant has received the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Merit, and when you see it blooming in your landscape, you will understand why. It is handsome and elegant and one you don’t want to pass up! We are currently growing Echeveria elegans in 4.5” pots and one gallon containers. Please give us a call, check out our Clearwater Color Nursery Facebook page, or our website at www.clearwatercolor.com to learn more about this and many other plants that we are growing.
