Tibouchina urvilleana ‘Princess Flower’

The family Melastomatacea is one of the largest flowering plant families containing 170 genera and 5000 species, occurring widely throughout the tropical and subtropical world. Native to Brazil and included in this family is the lovely Tibouchina urvilleana with its brilliant and exotic looking royal-purple, velvety flower rising on long stems. The leaves are veined and dark green, often edged in red. They grow openly on long stems that can range from 5-18 feet tall, and 3-10 feet wide. In the right conditions, at maturity, this evergreen shrub can grow to be a small tree.

Tibouchina need regular watering and partial shade in very hot conditions. In coastal conditions they will tolerate part sun (morning sun preferably). Preferring slightly acid soil, you will want to fertilize them in spring and fall, and make sure your soil is well drained. Protect the root area with mulch, especially in areas where temperatures fall below 20°F. Prune as desired to train these lovely plants into the size and shape you desire. ‘Princess Flower’ can be grown as a nice hedge, a deer resistant screen, or an accent plant. It is also ideal as a patio tree. The Sunset Climate Zones are 16, 17, 21-24.
