Fuchsia triphylla ‘Gartenmeister’
Fuchsia triphylla ‘Gartenmeister’
This handsome Fuchsia is a hybrid of a species that is originally grown in the West Indies. ‘Gartenmeister’ was introduced to the horticultural scene in 1905 and has been gracing gardens ever since. The scarlet-red tubular flowers create a striking contrast to the dark green-bronze-burgundy foliage. It has an upright growth habit and at maturity will reach 2-3 feet tall and wide. The ornate clusters of flowers attract hummingbirds and butterflies from far and wide.
Fuchsia triphylla ‘Gartenmeister’ thrives in morning sun and afternoon shade. It is more heat tolerant than most Fuchsias, however in regions with very hot summers it will may be necessary to mist the leaves daily. Adding an extra layer of mulch around the plant will help to keep the soil cool and moist. In general Fuchsias are heavy feeders and benefit from a once-a-month all-purpose fertilizer. ‘Gartenmeister’ has a long bloom season – almost year round in mild climates, but should be protected from frost in cold winter areas (or treated as an annual). The Sunset Climate Zones are 16-17, 23, 24.
Because Fuchsia flowers appear on new wood, it is important to do any pruning before new spring growth begins. Prune back any broken or crossing limbs and trim to desired shape or size. In cold winter areas, wait to trim off any frost-damaged stems until all danger of frost is past.
