Coreopsis auriculata ‘Nana’
Coreopsis auriculata ‘Nana’
Coreopsis is a beautiful, rugged Native American prairie and woodland perennial that is part of the sunflower family. Easy to care for, this dwarf version ‘Nana’, often referred to as ‘Mouse ear Coreopsis’ makes a great border or edging plant. Native to the Eastern and Southern United States, this cultivar is only propagated by cuttings, and will not come true from seed. It is clump forming (6-9 inches tall and wide), and will spread by root runners in your garden if given the space. It grows well in Sunset Zones 1-24.
Plant Coreopsis auriculata ‘Nana’ in full sun, in well-drained soil. The spectacular 2 inch wide golden- yellow flowers attract butterflies and the seed heads attract birds to the garden. ‘Nana’ blooms profusely over a long season - from spring through fall. Removing the dead flower heads will promote more blooms. It has a great reputation in the landscape for hardiness, beauty, and dependability. It pairs beautifully with the yellow in blue Iris, and contrasts well in front of taller plants such as Lavender heterophylla or Salvia ‘Victoria Blue’.
The name Coreopsis comes from the Greek ‘Koris’, meaning ‘bug’, and ‘Opsis’, meaning ‘like’, explaining why it is also sometimes referred to as ‘ear leaved tick-seed’, because its seed looks like a small bug. We are currently selling Coreopsis auriculata ‘Nana’ in both 1 Gallon containers and 4.5” flats.
