Carex praegracilis – California Field Sedge, Clustered Field Sedge

Carex praegracilis is a light to medium-green grass that grow 1 – 2.5 feet tall and spreads by rhizomes, forming a lush green carpet. It is increasing in popularity as a lawn substitute because it can mowed to about 2 inches tall, however if left to grow in its natural state it creates a verdant meadow-like environment. It is commonly found in meadows, coastal sand dunes, lakeshores, and open prairies, and can tolerate disturbed habitat such as along roadsides. It thrives in both sandy and alkaline soils.

Carex praegracilis requires less water than typical turf grasses, however, to maintain a fresh appearance and to prevent summer dormancy, supplemental irrigation is recommended under dry summer conditions. It is hardy to 10°F (Sunset climate zones are 6-14, 18-21)

We are growing Carex praegracilis in our 6 pack Premium Perennial flats. Give us a call to learn more about this grass, “Like” us on Facebook to see what’s happening around the nursery, and check out our website www.clearwatercolor.com to see photos of these plants and many others we are growing.
